I was having problems getting sound to work on Elluminate under Ubutnu 64-bit 8.04 Hardy Heron. Java is Sun Java (32-bit).
The problem was that Java (and so Elluminate) was failing to connect to a sound server and so was failing to record sound or output sound.
The solution is to get rid of pulseaudio with
sudo killall pulseaudio
You might have to also kill esd (I am not sure)
sudo killall esd
Then you wil probably have to restart Elluminate (or the java app you are running).
